Glimpses Of My Weekend In Rome, Italy
February 1, 2014

Rome, Italy, is such a wonderful and amazing city filled with magnificent historical buildings and places. In October 2012 I had the fortune to spend a lovely weekend there. The only negative about my trip was that it was way too short! But having said that, I still managed to take thousands of photos of the city and its sights, but obviously I cannot post them all here at once. So below are some glimpses of my weekend in Rome, Italy - for now. ;-).

First stop was - the Colosseum. Originally the Flavian Amphitheatre, the largest ever built elliptical Amphitheatre in the Roman Empire.

Overview, lots have happened over the years...

There were many places to stop and enjoy the sights that surrounded the Colosseum.

And it was not only humans who reflected over the views.

Not sure what building that was, but it sure looked more than a few years old.

Another view from the Colosseum. The Arch of Constantine, built by the Roman Senate to celebrate Constantine I's victory over Maxentius at the Battle of Milvian Bridge on October 28, 312.

Fontana Di Trevi, which was a very tight and crowded tourist location indeed.

I was here (in pink). ;-p

The Spanish Steps, the widest staircase in Europe.

Where you could enjoy a drink from this fountain if you wanted to (I did not). Hehe.

Another gorgeous building - The Ministry Of Culture And Heritage.

With its many stunning sculptures, this was one of my favourites. So vivid, and sad at the same time.

On our way along St. Peter's Square to the spectacular St. Peter's Basilica in the Vatican City.

After a few hours of queuing to get into the St. Peter's Basilica we finally made it inside. Phew!

But it was so worth the wait!

The Vatican Museums. What a roof!!! Wow!

Countless of breathtaking paintings everywhere I turned as well.

What can I say...

There were of course also many, many amazing sculptures in there as well. This one was of Laocoön and His Sons. Laocoön was a priest who advised against letting the wooden horse inside Troy, but not only was his warning ignored the Gods also sent serpents to kill him and his sons.

Finally we made it to the notorious Sistine Chapel with Michelangelo’s artwork on the roof.

Up there were, among other masterpieces, Michelangelo’s infamous "Last Judgment".

We could not leave without making our way up to the "Cupola".

It was a long and narrow climb... Phew! Even though we took the elevator half the way...

But also very well worth the effort to be able to see this view over the St. Peter's Square, where you can also see the endless queue to get in...
