Tidbits From Saint Petersburg
March 24, 2013

In 2011 I went on a cruise to, among other cities/countries, the lovely Saint Petersburg in Russia. I spent one day there, which was not nearly enough! So I definitely hope to go back there again. Because not only was Saint Petersburg a beautiful city filled with historic places, it was also a city filled with magnificent architecture and many stunning churches to explore. Therefore it was not easy to choose which photos to publish in this post, but below are some tidbits from my visit to Saint Petersburg in August of 2011.

Tidbits From Saint Petersburg - The Anichkov Bridge
There are more than 400 bridges in Saint Petersburg, this bridge was one of my favourites.

The Anichkov Bridge, or The Wild Horse Tame Bridge. On each corner of this bridge was a statue of a wild horse being tamed by a young man. Each statue symbolizes a stage in taming a wild horse.

Tidbits From Saint Petersburg - Nevsky Prospect
The main street in Saint Petersburg, Nevsky Prospect, started after the The Anichkov Bridge.

Tidbits From Saint Petersburg - Great Gostiny Dvor
Huge! The name of this department store is Great Gostiny Dvor.

The Great Gostiny Dvor has more than 100 indoor shops.

Tidbits From Saint Petersburg - The Saint Catherine Armenian Church
The Saint Catherine Armenian Church, built in 1771 -1776, was one of the many gorgeous churches located along the Nevsky Prospect.

Tidbits From Saint Petersburg - The Catholic Church of Saint Catherine
The Catholic Church of Saint Catherine, one of the oldest Catholic churches in Russia.

Tidbits From Saint Petersburg - The Lutheran Church of Saint Peter and Saint Paul
The Lutheran Church of Saint Peter and Saint Paul, one of the oldest and largest protestant churches in Russia, was also located along the Nevsky Prospect.

Tidbits From Saint Petersburg - The Church On Spilled Blood
The most famous church in Saint Petersburg seen from the main street was The Church On Spilled Blood.

This church which was built exactly where Emperor Alexander II was assassinated in March of 1881.

Tidbits From Saint Petersburg - The Church On Spilled Blood
The church was designed by architect Alfred Alexandrovich Parland. The Church On Spilled Blood has the largest collection of mosaics in Russia, more than 7000 square meters.

Tidbits From Saint Petersburg - Palace Square
At the end of Nevsky Prospect lies the Palace Square with several magnificent architectural buildings.

Tidbits From Saint Petersburg - The Winter Palace
The huge building behind the gigantic column there is The Winter Palace.

Tidbits From Saint Petersburg - The Winter Palace
Peter the Great founded Saint Petersburg in 1703 and The Winter Palace was commissioned by his daughter, Empress Elizabeth Petrovna, in 1754 as an official royal residence (finished 1764). Until the Russian revolution in 1917 The Winter Palace was where the Russian tsars and monarchs used to live.

Tidbits From Saint Petersburg - The General Staff Building
On the opposite side of The Winter Palace lies The General Staff Building, built between 1820-30.

Tidbits From Saint Petersburg - the Alexander Column
And the big column in the middle of The Palace Square is the Alexander Column, the tallest red granite column in the world.

Tidbits From Saint Petersburg - General Staff Building
A short cut from the Palace Square to the Nevsky Prospect is through the General Staff Building tunnel.

Tidbits From Saint Petersburg - Nevsky Prospect
A busy street indeed!

Tidbits From Saint Petersburg
About 60 small rivers and canals run through Saint Petersburg, some can be seen from Nevsky Prospect.

Tidbits From Saint Petersburg - Vision Of The Seas
Ta da! Here I am about to board the cruise ship I traveled to Saint Petersburg with from Stockholm in Sweden (via Tallinn in Estonia) after a very eventful and lovely day of sightseeing in Russia. And like I said in the beginning of the post - I will be back! :p

Easing the Journey: Top Ways To Avoid Being Seasick
March 13, 2013

Whether you’re a seasoned cruise addict or a first timer, feeling a little seasick at some point is a real worry. Going a little green in the gills when you’re still trying to find your sea legs is thought to be part and parcel of ocean trips, particularly if the seas are a little rough.

Nowadays, the chance of getting sick aboard a cruise, particularly the larger vessels, is slim to none, but that doesn’t mean it can never happen. With high-tech gadgetry and technology that helps to realign the hulls, even the choppiest of waves barely knock the larger cruise liners, but it’s better to be safe than sorry.

Whether you’re aboard the P&O Azura on your way to Northern Europe, or you are planning on embarking on a cruise to faraway shores, there are ways in which you can try and avoid a bout of seasickness including:

  • Use preventatives – whether that’s the acupressure wristbands, natural remedies (including ginger) or over the counter seasickness tablets, there are plenty of things available that are tested successes.

  • Avoid end of season sails because colder weather makes for choppier seas.

  • Choose the larger ships such as the P&O Azura or the RCI Oasis of the Seas – the bigger the vessel, the less it’ll get thrown around. You can easily book a cheap cruise on a large vessel, online.

  • Choose a central cabin and you’ll be closer to the ship’s centre of gravity and therefore, will move around less.

  • If you are faced with a bout of seasickness, try and look at the horizon to try and recalibrate your sense of balance.

  • Avoid copious amounts of rich food and alcohol, because a hangover certainly won’t help a gippy tummy.

If you head on to your cruise prepared, you can tackle seasickness head on. Hopefully, if you book a cheap cruise aboard a large ship like the P&O Azura, you’ll have no problem at all – rather than concentrating on the horizon, you can just focus on having an unforgettable trip.

A Fun And Entertaining Tour Of Universal Studios In Hollywood, USA
March 4, 2013

One of the most fun things I did during my two months stay in Hollywood, USA, was to visit the very entertaining Universal Studios! It was the first time I ever set foot in such a huge film producing area so I had no idea what to expect, but I absolutely loved it! Especially the tour we went on inside Universal Studios which took us around different, some very classic, movie and TV-series sets. My sister even saw the actor Owen Wilson ride a bike right past us while we were in the tour vehicle touring our little hearts out around the area - I can't believe I missed him!

Anyway, below are some photos from our visit to Universal Studios In Hollywood back in 2006. :-)

Needless to say, we spent an entire day there. And I had fun, despite looking a bit grumpy there. Lol!

I had no idea Universal Studios was so big nor that they had so many fun things to do there, it felt like being at a Disneyworld for adults. With the tour, amusement park area, shows and shopping. We could also get free tickets to tapings of different TV-shows in Hollywood, like Jay Leno for instance - which we went to of course. All in all, I want to go there again!! Correction, I WILL go there again! :p
