|The Freedom Of Camping In Australia
January 14, 2013
My best travel experience so far is when I went camping in Australia for five weeks with my sister. Now we were in Australia for a total of three months back in 2006, but it was the camping part that without a doubt had the deepest impact on me. Because not only did we get to see and experience this amazing country with its magnificent nature and animals up close, we also got a chance to get away from the busy every day life of work, TV, technology and the constant stress of having to go somewhere or do something. Which is why I must say that I have never felt more free in my life than I did during those five weeks.
Now there is no way I can sum up five weeks of camping in Australia in one post, which is one of the many reasons I decided to start this travel blog - because I have so much I want to share from my travels! Therefore I will most definitely write more posts about our five weeks of camping in Australia. But just to give an idea of what I am talking about, below are some photos and memories of the unforgettable camping adventure my sister and I had in Australia back in the beginning 0f 2006.
I was the designated driver the entire five weeks because my sister had not yet gotten her driver's license. And my first big adjustment to make was to remember that in Australia they have left-hand traffic! :o
We set out on our camping trip from Brisbane, but before heading south we drove up north to Bargara so we could have a look at the amazing Great Barrier Reef. Then we started to make our way down, mainly, along the coastline to Sydney.
And along the way we saw some Australian icons indeed, like these guys. :-)
Up close. We saw these cuties when we had stopped to eat a bite of food, an awesome view in other words.
Another impulse stop along the road, not sure exactly where though? But we were the only ones there. :-)
One of many reasons why I LOVE Australia!
Our tent and car on a camping site. In fact, all we had on our five weeks of camping were a car, a tent and some basic camping equipment.
Gotta eat. :p We were also on quite a tight budget so this was a very common activity. Hehe.
Another common sight on our camping trip, wildlife! Especially lizards, in all shapes and sizes.
Now this was another amazing experience! Every night, just after the sun had set, thousands and thousands of bats flew across the sky - without making a single sound. They were making their way to some of the nearby islands to eat apparently, I think someone at one of the zoos we visited told us that.
A fellow camping resident.
Lol! This was a crazy encounter! This very feisty raccoon woke us up one night while he was trying to steal our cooler outside our tent. So when I woke up, from the noise he made, the first thing I saw was a weird, big shadow lurking outside our tent - not what I want to wake up to in the middle of the night in a tent!
Finally my sister and I gathered enough courage to step outside our tent to check out what on earth was going on. And this was what we encountered.
When the raccoon saw us he quickly jumped up on our cooler to try and stop us from taking it inside the tent. A tug of war even took place between the raccoon and my sister before my sister finally got the cooler from this little guy. He was not happy, but after a while the raccoon gave up and climbed up the tree above us. (We kept our cooler inside the tent or in the car after that... Lol!)
We also saw many of these in Australia, ahhh!
Although we were in Australia for a total of three months, there are still a lot of places in Australia I want to visit - both for the first time and again. Because it is truly a paradise on Earth! And, like I said earlier, I have never felt more happy or at peace as I did when I was there - especially on our camping trip. Which I will revisit in more detail in future posts. But because this is my favourite travel experience so far, I thought it was quite fitting to start off my blog posts here on TheTravelingSoul.com with a flashback to that particular time in my life.
So welcome to TheTravelingSoul.com! I hope you all will enjoy this ride with me! :-)
