A Bordershop Express Trip To Puttgarden, Germany
July 3, 2013
When Sweden joined the European Union the amount of alcohol allowed to be brought back in to Sweden from fellow European Union countries increased. In fact, ever since January 1st 2004 the amount of alcohol allowed to be brought back in to Sweden from fellow European Union countries is pretty much unlimited. Because of this many Swedes go on day trips, mainly to Germany, with the sole purpose to stock up on alcoholic beverages. And due to the fact that these types of trips to Germany have become so popular, Bordershops with all kinds of alcoholic beverages for sale have been built next to ferry terminals in Germany so that people quickly can cross the border, buy alcohol and return home.
Of course the main reason us Swedes go all the way to Germany to buy alcohol is because the alcohol is a lot cheaper there than in Sweden. For instance, a bottle of wine that cost 3,5 Euros in Germany cost about 7 Euros in Sweden. Or if I compare the price of Absolut Vodka, price per liter, it costs about three times as much in Sweden as in Germany. Basically the tax on alcohol in Sweden is so high that if you go to Germany and buy lots of alcohol it becomes cheaper than to buy it in Sweden. Actually, I have written a post called "Why alcohol monopoly in Sweden?" about the alcohol monopoly in Sweden where I explain a bit about how the alcohol monopoly system works in Sweden.
Now although I do not go on trips like these often, I did go on one a few weeks ago to stock up for the summer season. And because I love to travel I really enjoyed to just get away for a while, even if it was for less than 24 hours. :-)
So below are some photos from my Bordershop Express Trip To Puttgarden, Germany.

This is where we got picked up by the bus around 4 AM in Karlskrona, Sweden (where I live).

After a few hours on the road we crossed the Oresund Bridge between Sweden and Denmark.

After a few hours on the road through Denmark we hopped on one of these and made our way from Rodby in Denmark to Puttgarden in Germany.

The ferry ride took about 45 minutes.

Entertainment options on the ferry.

I really needed one of these after having gotten up so early in the morning (middle of the night). ;p

Time to get on the bus again.

About 5 minutes from the where the ferry arrives the huge Bordershop was located, our destination.

The Bordershop is actually a boat.

The Bordershop has four floors packed with different types of alcoholic beverages, and some other things too, but mainly alcohol.

And there were plenty of opportunities for some wine tasting.

Even unsupervised wine tasting. Hehe.

And it was very obvious who the main target audience was, a very Swedish Midsummer display.

Also very Swedish and traditional to drink on Midsummer's Eve.

There were signs like this everywhere with information of how much money we saved by shopping there instead of in Sweden.

Beer!

Shopping, shopping, shopping.

My cart, I would like to point out that I did not buy all this just for myself. Hehe.

The bus we rode on.

With a trailer of course, so we all could fit in our finds.

Well organized.

Nice view behind the bus.

Though we did not have much time to enjoy it. In total we were in Germany about 3 hours, we had about 2,5 hours to shop.

So before we knew it it was time to head back home to Sweden again.

Relaxing on the ferry.

Ahhh. :-)

Me.

In Denmark again.

Over the Oresund Bridge.

And back home in Karlskrona, Sweden. Time to unload.
The trip went smoothly I think. It was the first time I went on an Express version of this trip, which meant fewer stops along the way and that we returned a bit earlier home than with the ordinary version of this trip. And though I would have liked a break on the five hour journey from Karlskrona to Rodby, it was nice to get home earlier than I have before on the other trips like this. Therefore, when I go on a Bordershop trip again it will be an Express one. :-)
